Reviews I Hate English
Newly arrived from Hong Kong, Mei Mei has trouble adjusting to New York's Chinatown and her American school. This adaptation of Ellen Levine's book about a young girl who fears ¡°she might lose something¡± if she speaks English takes viewers on Mei Mei's journey to assimilate and retain her identity. The minimal pen drawings, bright with colorful watercolor washes, help bring Mei Mei's story into our hearts. Competently narrated by the author, this program features a follow-up conversation with Levine, who offers additional insight into the tale. An excellent discussion prompter. Booklist, April 15, 2007
Viewers will empathize with Mei Mei and her difficulties accepting a new language and culture in this iconographic version of Ellen Levine's book. The story is narrated by the author with gentle string music in the background. Steve Bjorkman's bright, cartoon-style watercolor illustrations reveal the character's strong emotions. At the story's conclusion, Levine speaks about how her own experience teaching English to teens at a community center contributed to the book. An inspiring production. School Library Journal, April 2007.
